Samuel Guerrier

Samuel Guerrier is a fine art photographer based in Paris. Trained as a painter at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, J.Y. Guionet artist studio, and L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Caen and as a computer graphics specialist, Guerrier approaches digital photography as a painter who uses light to bring his subject to life. The son of a French Catholic mother and a Tunisian Muslim father who gave him a Jewish name, Guerrier stands at the crossroads of cultures, religions, and artistic influences. His work has been covered in press articles in China, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, and USA. 

 

His photographs combine detailed settings and powerful acting on the part of his models.  These portfolios are often set in a different period : Paris of the twenties, the ancient Rome, the Renaissance or the 19th century New York... Guerrier enjoys playing with bestiary symbolism, engaging our unconscious mind, while conjuring themes that are at once dark and absorbing (the fear, the desperation, the passionnate love, the loss of a lover, the mysticism, the environment and the pollution, the death and the resurrection...). Guerrier weaves dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and solarization techniques with bestiary and surrealist symbolism to build worlds in which his subjects compel and devastate their observers. Taking up the dual role of director and photographer, Guerrier creates his portfolios like one would a film, with a story, a set, costumes, and with well directed actors. He constructs his photographs in a series format, which evokes film storyboards, unveiling his narrative image by image. 

 

Since 2013’s Salome at the Louvre Museum portfolio, Guerrier’s work has become increasingly conceptual, critiquing iconoclasm, religion, and history. In Salome, the famous temptress triumphantly holds the head of St. Jean the Baptist in her hand with a direct regard on her public. The head, torn directly from Leonardo’s masterpiece, also smiles out at us, while the wound in his canvas gapes open raggedly, the master and the saint destroyed at once. The audience, the silent and perhaps complicit witness, is left questioning the sacred in art and in religion.

 

The Parisian gallery Artefact has shown the recent work of Samuel Guerrier, including the portfolio "Cosmo" with mystical and shamanic overtones, being the fruit of his collaboration with the Chilian sculptor Cosmo Gonik. Some time ago, the American journalist Diane Pernet had already celebrated this Chilean French artistic association by publishing in particular several laudatory articles in her famous blog "A Shaded View On Fashion" (ASVOF), as well as in the magazine "Modern Weekly" of Shanghai (China). 

 

Samuel Guerrier was always tempted to move from photo to the film, it's done now : he has just co-directed his first short movie called "L'impasse" with the photographer Alison Gallego. The movie is selected to "First Friday Festival - USA (Kansas City)" - July '18 edition of 4FKC. and received the Prize of the "Best 1st Time Filmaker" to the Creation International Film Festival in Ottawa (Ontario, Canada).

Samuel Guerrier est un artiste photographe basé à Paris. Infographiste de formation, il a également suivi des cours de peinture et d'art plastique à l'Académie de la Grande Chaumière, à l’atelier du peintre expressionniste J.Y.Guionet, et  

à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Caen. Guerrier approche la photographie numérique comme un peintre qui utilise la lumière pour amener son sujet à la vie.  Né d'une mère catholique française et d'un père musulman tunisien qui lui ont donné un prénom juif, Samuel Guerrier est au carrefour des cultures, des religions et des influences artistiques. Son travail a été diffusé dans la presse en Chine, en Allemagne, en Italie, en France, au Royaume-Uni, et aux Etats-Unis.

 

Ses photographies combinent des paramètres détaillés à un jeu puissant  de la part de ses modèles. Ces portfolios s’inscrivent souvent dans une période différente : la Rome antique, la Renaissance, le New York du 19ème siècle ou le Paris des années 20... Guerrier aime jouer avec le symbolisme bestiaire, engageant notre esprit inconscient, tout en évoquant des thèmes qui sont à la fois sombres et absorbants (la peur, le désespoir, l'amour passionnel, la disparition d'un amant, le mysticisme, l'environnement et la pollution, la mort et la résurrection...). Guerrier peint un éclairage clair-obscur dramatique, qu’il mêle à des techniques de solarisation afin de construire un monde surréaliste dans lequel ses sujets  contraignent et dévastent leurs observateurs. Reprenant le double rôle du réalisateur et du photographe, Guerrier crée ses portfolios comme on réaliserait un film, avec une histoire, un décor, des costumes et des acteurs. Il construit ses photographies sous forme de séries, qui rappellent les story-boards de films, dévoilant une narration image par image.

 

Depuis le portfolio Salomé au Louvre (2013), le travail de Guerrier est devenu de plus en plus conceptuel, questionnant l'iconoclasme, la religion et l'histoire. Dans Salomé, la célèbre tentatrice détient triomphalement la tête de Saint Jean-Baptiste, en regardant son public droit dans les yeux. La tête,  arrachée du tableau de Léonard de Vinci, nous sourit également, alors que la toile est en lambeaux, le maître et le saint détruits dans le même temps. Le public, ce témoin silencieux et peut-être complice, est laissé à questionner le sacré dans l'art et dans la religion.

 

En 2016 la galerie parisienne Artefact a exposé les œuvres récentes de Samuel Guerrier, dont le portfolio "Cosmo" aux accents mystiques et chamaniques, fruit de sa collaboration avec le sculpteur chilien Cosmo Gonik. Quelques temps auparavant, la journaliste américaine Diane Pernet avait déjà célébré cette association artistique franco-chilienne en publiant notamment plusieurs articles élogieux sur son fameux blog "A Shaded View On Fashion" (ASVOF), ainsi que dans le magazine "Modern Weekly" of Shanghai (Chine).

De l'appareil photo à la caméra il n'y a qu'un pas que Samuel Guerrier vient de franchir allégrement en co-réalisant son premier court-métrage intitulé "L'impasse" avec la photographe Alison Gallego. Le film est en sélection officielle au "First Friday Festival" 2018 - USA (Kansas City). July '18 edition of 4FKC. Et a reçu en janvier 2018 le prix "Best 1st Time Filmaker" au festival Creation International Film Festival à Ottawa (Ontario, Canada).
